Brazil’s response to the antimicrobial resistance threat
2024 has marked a significant milestone in global strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through multilateral bodies. Key milestones include the 77° World Health Assembly Resolution, the Political Declaration of the 2nd High-Level Meeting on AMR at the United Nations General Assembly, the BRICS Joint Declaration on AMR, the G20 health declaration hosted by Brazil, and the Jeddah Declaration endorsed during the 4th Ministerial Meeting on AMR. Brazil has actively contributed to these milestones by developing its multisectoral national action plan on AMR, strengthening the Unified Health System (SUS) and establishing transversal actions for the control of resistant infections. The National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) has been developing actions for the prevention and control of HAI and AMR since 1999. Brazil joined the WHO Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) in 2017 and has strengthened the public health laboratory network to support and expand AMR surveillance.
